Measure N passes, finally official

San Mateo County election personnel officially declared Measure N, the Pacifica School District's parcel tax, a winner Monday, June 30. Supporters were alerted last Thursday the official announcement would be forthcoming, said David Tom, elections manager.

"It's amazing how it ended up and they got exactly the number of votes necessary," Tom said.

Since the vote was taken on June 3, election officials have been busy recounting votes as necessary to certify the results. The Secretary of State requires a ten percent manual recount if the victory fall within one-half percent.

"We did that to ensure the vote count was accurate," Tom said.

Both the Pacifica and Millbrae parcel tax measures fell within one-half percent of victory. The PSD was victorious, but the Millbrae tax did not pass.

During that recount process, all the electronic ballots were found to be 100 percent accurate. Out of the paper ballots, however, the scanners had trouble reading a marking pen and erasure marks on a few of the ballots, Tom said.

"That occurs in every election," Tom said.

Out of the paper ballots, four new votes were discovered two "yes" and two "no," which cancelled each other out for the PSD parcel tax, Tom said.

"It hasn't changed since our final vote count was released," Tom said.

Senior citizen exemption forms are available from the school district office, located at 375 Reina del Mar Avenue, from the senior services center at the Pacifica Community Center located at Highway 1 and Crespi Drive, at both branches of the Pacifica library and on the Pacifica School District website www.pacificasd.org. The deadline for the County to receive those forms is July 15.
