Logic & Accuracy Testing Tomorrow
for May 6 All Mail Portola Valley School District Election
Process Ensures Accuracy of Counting Software
Redwood City, CA – On April 4, the San Mateo County Elections Office will conduct the Logic & Accuracy (L & A) testing of the two eSlates (a disabled access unit and a regular unit) that will be set up in the foyer of the Elections Office at 40 Tower Road for early voting for voters who live in the Portola Valley School District. This all-mail election will be held on May 6.
L & A testing consists of procedures necessary to ensure hardware and software to be used in the election is working properly. Any member of the public is welcome to observe the L & A process. This particular L & A Testing is unusual in that only two electronic voting machines will be tested as those are the only two in use for public voting in this election.
The L & A testing will first focus on the electronic votes cast on the two eSlate voting machines. When the electronic voting process is tested, testers cast ballots that mirror the current election from a pre‐determined “matrix.” When they finish voting, the tabulations must be a perfect match in order for the equipment to pass the L & A test. Given that there is only one contest on the ballot, the testing matrix is very simple and it will take very little time to complete. Tests are conducted in all three languages.
The second portion of the L & A testing will focus on the accurate tabulation of paper ballots that are scanned on the Ballot Now machines at Tower Road. It will commence once the testing of the electronic voting process is complete. Most, if not all, of the turnout in this special all-mail ballot election is expected to come from these ballots.
The testing matrices for voting a paper ballot are identical to the testing matrices for voting an electronic ballot. Only the conduct of the testing changes.
As required by law, the Elections Office invites representatives from the political party central committees in San Mateo County. In addition to the county central committee members, any interested member of the public may observe the L&A process, or any other process at the Elections Division.
